Dr. Ivan Katavić is an Emeritus Professor from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (IOF), University of Split, Croatia. He retired as Head of the Aquaculture Laboratory of IOF. As an experienced Fisheries Biologist, Dr. Katavić worked on the fields of fisheries and aquaculture with emphasis on the status, treats and management of fisheries resources, introduction of new species, coastal zone planning for aquaculture, and effects of aquaculture on aquatic ecosystem.

Dr. Katavić is an internationally recognized expert on Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) has published extensively on this species and has served as external expert to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), Deputy Croatian Minister of Fisheries (2001-2008), vice Chair to the General Fisheries Commission (GFCM) for the Mediterranean (2005 -2009) and Coordinator of the Regional Network for Environmental Aspects of Mediterranean Aquaculture for the United Nations (UN) Environment Program (UNEP) – Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP). He also headed numerous UNEP/Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of UN missions throughout the Mediterranean coastal region.

From 2000-2013 Dr. Katavić headed Croatian delegation to ICCAT, and in parallel was involved in coordination and research activities focused on tuna related research within ICCAT’s Standing Committee Research and Statistics (SCRS). Former students of Dr. Katavić are leaders in the field and occupy aquaculture-related positions throughout the Mediterranean Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector. Since 2017 Dr. Katavić serves as Scientific Advisor to Ichthus Unlimited on tuna related activities in the Mediterranean Sea.
