Dr. Shunsuke Koshio earned his Ph.D. in 1985 from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, specializing in American lobster nutrition. He previously completed his M.S. at Tokyo University of Fisheries (now Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology), Japan, focusing on freshwater prawn physiology. Following his post-doctoral work at Dalhousie University, Dr. Koshio joined Kagoshima University, Japan, as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Fisheries. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993 and to Full Professor in 2002, a position he held until 2019. He now serves as a Scientific Advisor at Ichthus Unlimited.
During his tenure at Kagoshima University, Dr. Koshio held several leadership roles, including President’s Assistant from 2003 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2008. In April 2016, he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, a role he served in until March 2019, after which he was appointed Executive Vice President (General Affairs) from April 2019 to March 2023. Since May 2023, Dr. Koshio has been operating as an independent aquaculture consultant through his firm, Koshio Aqua Consulting.
Dr. Koshio’s extensive academic experience includes Sabbatical stays with visiting scientist positions at the Department of Food Science, Technical University of Nova Scotia, Canada (1991), and the Department of Animal Science, University of California, Davis (1999-2000). His research interests encompass aquatic animal nutrition, bioenergetics, nutrition and stress, and nutrition and health. He has published over 250 scientific papers in these fields.
